WhatToWatch ("we," "us," "our") respects your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect and how we use it.
Browsing WhatToWatch — searching titles, viewing WatchScores, Trending, and Hidden Gems — does not require an account and does not collect personal information.
Creating a free account is required to save titles to a Watchlist, join or post in Communities, comment on a title's discussion page, vote on posts and comments, or take the recommendation quiz. Creating an account collects your email address; if you sign in with Google, we also receive your name and profile picture from your Google account. We do not collect payment information — WhatToWatch has no paid features.
Content you choose to submit while signed in — comments, Community posts, votes, your Watchlist, and quiz answers — is stored and, for comments and posts, publicly visible under your account.
WhatToWatch aggregates publicly available data from several third-party sources to generate our WatchScore™ sentiment analysis and provide streaming and trending information, including: The Movie Database (TMDB), YouTube Data API, Trakt, Bluesky, X, Tumblr, AniList, OMDb, and Watchmode.
If you create an account, we use Google for sign-in authentication, and share your email address (and name, if provided) with Resend to deliver sign-in and notification emails, and with Drip to deliver our newsletter if you're subscribed. These services only receive what's needed to provide sign-in and email delivery on our behalf.
This application uses YouTube API Services. By using WhatToWatch, you are also agreeing to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service. Google's Privacy Policy is available at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
We use the YouTube Data API solely to identify publicly available review and reaction videos relevant to a searched title, and to read public comment text for the purpose of sentiment analysis. We do not store raw YouTube video content, and comment data used for analysis is not retained beyond the timeframe needed to generate a WatchScore.
This use of the YouTube API is entirely server-side: our backend queries YouTube's Data API directly, rather than your browser or device. We do not embed YouTube video players, use YouTube tracking pixels, or set cookies or use other device-level technology in connection with the YouTube API. No information is collected from or about your device through our use of YouTube API Services.
To improve performance, we cache the results of our sentiment analysis (the WatchScore, summarized themes, and paraphrased representative reactions) for a limited time. We do not cache or store raw, individual user comments from YouTube or other sources beyond what's needed to generate this cached result.
If you have an account, you can delete it at any time from Account Settings on your Profile page. This permanently removes your account and the personal data associated with it — your Watchlist, comments, Community posts, votes, and quiz answers. We may update this policy as WhatToWatch evolves. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date.
